Error mitigation

Also: zne, zero noise extrapolation, readout mitigation, trex

Techniques that reduce the bias noise introduces into results, without the qubit overhead of full error correction.

Zero-noise extrapolation runs a circuit at deliberately amplified noise levels and extrapolates back to zero; readout mitigation inverts the measured confusion matrix. They cost extra shots rather than extra qubits, and they correct averages, not individual runs.

  • Noise — Any unwanted process that disturbs a quantum computation: imperfect gates, decoherence, crosstalk, readout errors.
  • Quantum error correction — Encoding quantum information redundantly so errors can be detected and fixed without measuring — and destroying — the data.
  • NISQ — John Preskill’s name for today’s era: devices with tens to a few thousand noisy qubits and no full error correction.
